How Much Should a Business Website Cost in the UK?
Why UK website quotes vary so widely and how to compare scope, design, content, SEO, integrations and ongoing costs.
UK website prices vary because “a website” is not a standard unit. A five-page brochure site using supplied copy and images is a different project from a ten-page redesign with research, copywriting, photography planning, ecommerce, booking, CRM integration and an existing search footprint to preserve.
What moves the price most
- Number and complexity of page templates
- Copywriting and content migration
- Ecommerce or booking functionality
- Custom integrations and customer accounts
- Brand and image work
- SEO research and content depth
- Approval rounds and stakeholder count
- Ongoing support, hosting and search work
Three common ways to buy a website
Managed monthly website: a simple option where the provider builds and manages a defined site for a recurring fee.
For a current, apples-to-apples comparison, see our UK monthly website packages, where the setup fees, initial commitment, page limits and hosting are stated alongside each plan. A website built for you and a standalone SEO campaign are separate products, so compare the work before comparing monthly prices.
Website & SEO package: a setup fee plus recurring website/search work built around a predictable sector or business model.
Bespoke project: a project price based on the actual requirements, often followed by optional care or SEO.
Package website or bespoke project?
A package works well when the starting scope is predictable. A bespoke quote makes more sense when the website has unusual functionality, a large catalogue, many services, multiple integrations or a complicated migration.
How much does a website cost? Compare real first-year examples
The most useful starting figure is the total for the initial commitment, not the smallest number in an advert. For a 12-month plan, calculate setup fee + (monthly price × 12) + any required extras. Keep optional work separate so you can compare equivalent quotations.
The examples below are SmartyX prices checked on 14 October 2026, not UK market averages. All five plans have a 12-month initial term. The linked plan review contains the current inclusions, exclusions and terms.
| Plan | Setup | Monthly | 12-month minimum |
|---|---|---|---|
| Launch | £199 | £49 | £787 |
| Business | £299 | £79 | £1,247 |
| Pro | £399 | £119 | £1,827 |
| Website + SEO | £299 | £179 | £2,447 |
| Online Shop | £995 | £179 | £3,143 |
These totals exclude optional purchases and separately agreed work. Domain registration or renewal, paid software and additional development are not automatically included. Monthly billing does not mean that a plan can be cancelled without regard to its initial term.
Example: a small service business
A business needing up to three core pages and limited content changes could review Launch. One needing up to five pages and a monthly small-change allowance could review Business. The first-year difference is £460: £1,247 less £787. Decide whether the additional page and support scope is useful; do not assume the more expensive plan is always the better choice.
Example: a website with continuing SEO work
Website + SEO has the same £299 setup price as Business but costs £100 more each month: a £1,200 difference over the initial year. It includes a defined monthly allowance of up to 60 minutes of prioritised technical or existing-page SEO improvements, alongside the stated website and care scope. It is not an unlimited content, link-building or national SEO campaign. See the website design and SEO packages and distinguish them from standalone SEO services for an existing website.
Example: an online shop
The Online Shop example covers a defined WooCommerce starting scope, not every possible store. A large product migration, a custom configurator or a stock-system connection changes the work involved. Compare your catalogue, product options and delivery requirements against the plan before using its headline price as your project budget. Our WooCommerce website design service explains those decisions.
A five-line worksheet for comparing website quotes
- Build: record the setup or project fee and the agreed pages, products and functions.
- Recurring service: multiply the required monthly charges by the initial term.
- Other costs: record domain fees, paid extensions, payment-provider charges and separately quoted integrations where relevant.
- Your contribution: identify who supplies copy, images, product data and approvals.
- After launch: check the update allowance, ongoing SEO work, ownership arrangements and cancellation or transfer process.
Ask when monthly billing begins. In SmartyX’s Website + SEO and Online Shop scopes, the monthly service starts from the order date. Supply content and agree the build timetable with the team rather than assuming billing begins only after publication.
Compare price alongside design quality
A cheap website that makes the business look cheap can be poor value. Equally, a £5,000 project is not good value just because an agency used a premium theme and a long proposal. Open the portfolio. Check the mobile layouts. Look at the level of business-specific detail.
What about domains, hosting and email?
These are usually small compared with the cost of good design and content, but they matter operationally. Existing working services do not need to be moved just because a new agency takes over the website.
What should a quote explain?
- Initial project/setup cost
- Recurring charges
- Page/template allowance
- Content responsibilities
- Third-party costs
- Revision process
- Ongoing support
- Ownership and cancellation terms
What should you do before paying for a website?
Open the supplier’s real projects, compare the written scope with your requirements and check the total commitment. A portfolio is more useful when it explains the job. For example, the Mazda Bongo Auto Centre website project involves different customer routes from a simple brochure site. It illustrates why page count alone is not a complete specification.
