SEO Packages UK: What Should a Monthly SEO Service Include?

A practical guide to comparing UK SEO packages by the work delivered, the pages improved and the evidence used to choose priorities.

SEO packages can look similar on a pricing table while delivering very different amounts of real work. A useful monthly SEO service should make it clear which pages are being improved, which technical issues are being handled and how priorities are chosen from actual search data.

Before choosing a supplier, read our companion checklist for choosing an SEO agency in the UK. It covers ownership, link building, evidence and the questions to ask before signing.

What do UK SEO packages cost in October 2026? SmartyX currently publishes three starting prices for ongoing SEO on an existing website: Local SEO from £495/month, Growth SEO from £895/month and Ecommerce SEO from £1,495/month. The correct scope depends on competition, important pages and implementation needed; these are starting prices, not a universal quote. Compare the live SEO package inclusions and pricing. If you also need a website built, see our separate website design and SEO packages.

Start with the pages closest to commercial value

Search Console can show which pages already earn impressions, which queries are close to page one and which landing pages attract relevant clicks. Those existing opportunities often deserve attention before a new blog calendar is created. For real examples, our four-site Search Console data note compares dated clicks and impressions while explaining what the figures do not prove.

Technical SEO is the foundation, not the whole service

Indexation, canonicals, redirects, crawlability, structured data, performance issues and sitemap problems matter because they affect how search engines understand the site. Once the technical foundation is sound, most growth comes from improving useful important service and product pages and building stronger relevance around them.

Monthly implementation should be visible

A good SEO package should describe the work completed during the month: landing-page improvements, internal links, technical fixes, local-search work, content updates, new useful pages or ecommerce architecture. Reporting should explain the work and the evidence behind the next priorities.

What a useful monthly work record looks like

For each substantial change, ask for the page or issue, the reason it was prioritised, what changed and how it was checked. A record such as ‘repaired an old service URL receiving impressions, tested the replacement page and added relevant internal links’ explains the work more clearly than ‘technical optimisation completed’.

The next priority may be an existing page rather than a new article. For example, a service page attracting relevant impressions but few clicks could need a clearer search snippet, better content or stronger evidence. Average position and click-through rate should be considered alongside the query, country, device and period; they do not prove why a customer did not enquire.

Agree how development work is handled

Some improvements need a developer: fixing a template that ignores edited content, changing an ecommerce filter or repairing a form. Establish whether implementation is included, separately quoted or passed to your existing developer. A list of recommendations alone is not the same deliverable as completed changes.

Keep a website build separate from ongoing SEO

An SEO retainer for an existing website is different from a package that also includes a new site. Compare monthly SEO services and pricing when the current website is suitable. Compare website design and SEO packages when both the build and continuing search work are needed. A website-care service has a different purpose again.

Check that case-study evidence supports the claim

Look for the named website, reporting period, work delivered and data source. Search impressions show appearances; clicks show visits from search. Neither is a sales total. An agency should not attach another client’s search numbers to your industry and present them as a forecast.

The Kinmel Campers website and SEO case study is an example of how service architecture and published evidence can be reviewed together. Use a case study to assess relevant experience, then ask how the proposed work differs for your own market.

Local, growth and ecommerce SEO are different jobs

  • Local SEO: stronger service pages, Google Business Profile, local relevance and conversion from local searches.
  • Growth SEO: broader commercial-page improvement across more services, locations or competitive terms.
  • Ecommerce SEO: category architecture, product discoverability, canonicals, filters, internal links and commercial content.

What should an SEO package report?

Impressions, clicks, average position, enquiries and revenue are different measurements. Useful reporting keeps them separate and shows the date range, source and pages affected rather than turning every visibility gain into a sales claim.

A monthly report that helps you make a decision

What to ask for in an SEO report
Report item Useful detail What it does not prove
Search visibility Query, landing page, country, date range, impressions and average position. A fixed live ranking seen by every customer.
Organic clicks Relevant clicks and a like-for-like comparison period, with branded and service searches distinguished where possible. That every click is a new buyer or a different person.
Completed work The affected URL or issue, the change made and how it was verified. That a task caused an immediate ranking change.
Enquiries Successfully saved or delivered requests, with internal tests and spam kept separate. Confirmed bookings, paid invoices or profit.
Next priorities The pages worth improving next and the reason they matter commercially. A promise that publishing a particular number of articles will win a position.

Google explains the differences between Search Console impressions, clicks and position. Ask the supplier to retain those distinctions in your report. For example, an average position of 2 is not evidence that your site is permanently second for every searcher.

Match the allowance to the job

A fixed monthly allowance needs priorities. It cannot honestly mean unlimited new pages, development, outreach and reporting. In SmartyX’s Website + SEO plan, the stated SEO allowance is up to 60 minutes of prioritised technical or existing-page improvements each month. A more extensive programme needs its own agreed scope. Compare the Website + SEO scope with standalone monthly SEO packages rather than treating the two services as interchangeable.

For a local service business, use our trade website checklist to identify the service pages, project evidence and enquiry routes the programme should support. For a garage, converter or specialist parts business, see the automotive SEO approach.

Questions to ask before choosing a package

  • Which pages will be worked on first?
  • How much implementation is included each month?
  • Is technical SEO included?
  • Will you improve existing pages or mainly publish new articles?
  • How are Search Console and analytics used?
  • What happens when the website itself needs redesign or development?
